Hubert Wolf schildert den erstaunlichen Weg des kränkelnden jungen Adligen aus der Provinz zum mächtigsten und am längsten amtierenden Papst der Geschichte (1846 - 1878), der den Katholizismus neu erfand. Das fesselnd und anschaulich geschriebene Buch ist eine kalte Dusche für alle, die im Papst den Repräsentanten uralter Traditionen sehen. Nach der Französischen Revolution lag das prächtige, aber jahrhundertelang krumm und schief gewachsene Gebäude des Katholizismus in Trümmern und musste neu errichtet werden. Doch in welchem Stil? Romantisch-mittelalterlich? Oder zeitgemäß-modern? Während die einen noch stritten, bauten die anderen schon neu: Hubert Wolf beschreibt, wie der Katholizismus im Namen erfundener Traditionen ganz auf Rom ausgerichtet wurde. Mit Pius IX. wurde 1846 der richtige Papst für dieses Programm gewählt: Im Bewusstsein eigener Machtvollkommenheit verkündete er das Dogma von der Unbefleckten Empfängnis Mariens, schottete die Kirche mit dem «Syllabus errorum» von Demokratie und Moderne ab und ließ sich auf dem Ersten Vatikanischen Konzil für unfehlbar erklären. Traditionalistischen Kritikern beschied er kühl: «La tradizione sono io», die Tradition bin ich! Als kurz darauf der Kirchenstaat endgültig verloren ging, konnte das die weltweite Verehrung des «Gefangenen im Vatikan» nur noch steigern. Das Buch macht eindrucksvoll deutlich, wie seither alles mit dem Papst steht - und mit ihm fällt.
