Kranke in der Stadt wurden vorsorglich eingemauert. So blieb Mailand als einzige Stadt Italiens verschont. Volker Reinhardt hat die verfügbaren Quellen zur Großen Pest neu gesichtet und zeigt in seinem anschaulich erzählten Buch, dass der vermeintliche europäische Flächenbrand eine Summe von lokalen Dramen war, die die Menschen auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise bewältigten: durch politische Umstürze, Verfolgung von Minderheiten, Restauration alter Verhältnisse oder eben durch ein Lob der Tyrannis à la Mailand. Klassische Pestbeschreibungen wie die von Boccaccio erweisen sich als spätere Stilisierung nach antiken Vorbildern, doch Bilder, Bauwerke oder anonyme Chronisten lassen ermessen, wie groß die Verunsicherung war und wie übermächtig die Sehnsucht nach der verlorenen Normalität.
