Wenige Tage nach Kriegsbeginn schrieb Sophie Scholl an ihren Freund: "Ich kann es nicht begreifen, dass nun dauernd Menschen in Lebensgefahr gebracht werden von anderen Menschen. Ich kann es nie begreifen und ich finde es entsetzlich. Sag nicht, es ist für's Vaterland." Gestützt auf teils noch unveröffentlichte Selbstzeugnisse schildert Maren Gottschalk das so verheißungsvolle Leben Sophie Scholls, die sich nach anfänglicher Faszination für die Hitlerjugend immer entschiedener gegen den Nationalsozialismus stellte. 1942 ging sie in den aktiven Widerstand. Am 18. Feburar 1943 wurde sie mit nur 21 Jahren verhaftet, vier Tage später mit dem Fallbeil hingerichtet.«Wir schweigen nicht, wir sind Euer böses Gewissen, die Weiße Rose lässt Euch keine Ruhe!», heißt es auf einem Flugblatt der kleinen studentischen Widerstandsgruppe "Weiße Rose" in München, zu deren innerem Kreis neben Alexander Schmorell und Hans Scholl auch dessen jüngere Schwester Sophie Scholl (1921 - 1943) gehörte. Selbst im Gerichtssaal vor Roland Freisler sprach die Einundzwanzigjährige unbeirrt aus, was sie dachte: «Was wir schrieben und sagten, das denken Sie alle ja auch, nur haben Sie nicht den Mut, es auszusprechen.» Maren Gottschalk beschreibt anschaulich und quellennah Sophie Scholls kurzes Leben und macht deutlich, woher sie den Mut nahm, sich anders als die große Mehrheit der Deutschen offen gegen das NS-Regime und seinen Vernichtungskrieg zu stellen.
