Bisher wurde die Biographie Montaignes meist aus seinen verführerisch authentisch klingenden Schriften abgeleitet. Volker Reinhardt geht den umgekehrten Weg und macht von Montaignes Leben aus die Essays neu verständlich: als eine Überlebensphilosophie in Zeiten der Gewalt, die uns bis heute direkt anspricht.
