Dass er ein Alkoholproblem hatte, ist bekannt und soll zu seinem frühen Tod geführt haben. Überhaupt soll er seinem Namen wenig Ehre gemacht haben. Doch August stieg nach seinem Jurastudium rasch in der herzoglichen Verwaltung Weimars auf und wurde mit gerade mal 34 Jahren zum Geheimen Kammerrat ernannt. Er gehörte dem Hof an, heiratete eine Frau aus altem Adel und war ein angesehenes Mitglied der Weimarer Gesellschaft. Wie Stephan Oswald entdeckt hat, unternahm er eigene literarische Versuche – die erhaltenen Fragmente werden hier erstmals veröffentlicht. Wahr ist allerdings auch, dass sein Vater ihn mehr und mehr zu seinem Faktotum machte, zum Assistenten in allen möglichen Angelegenheiten. Stephan Oswalds einfühlsame und lebendig geschriebene Biographie zeigt, in welchem Maße der Schatten des Vaters auf August lastete und seiner Entfaltung enge Grenzen setzte.
