"Merkwürdiger Fund einer türkischen Reisebeschreibung", meldete der Orientalist Josef von Hammer im Jahr 1814. Gemeint war das Seyahatname – "Reisebuch" – des Evliya Çelebi, das seitdem die Forschung beschäftigt. Der gebildete Istanbuler hat mit unstillbarer Neugierde die meisten Provinzen und Hunderte von Städten des Osmanischen Reichs und seiner Nachbarn besucht und ebenso akribisch wie unterhaltsam beschrieben. Aus Mekka und Medina kehrte er als Hadschi zurück. Als Muezzin stand er im Kampf gegen die Venezianer auf den Mauern von Kreta. In derselben Funktion nahm er 1664 an der osmanischen Gesandtschaft nach Wien teil und lieferte ein hinreißendes, stellenweise satirisches Panorama der Stadt und ihres Kaisers. Seine Beschreibung Ägyptens kann es mit Napoleons Description de l'Égypte aufnehmen. Klaus Kreisers sorgfältige Auswahl aus dem riesigen Schatz folgt den zehn Büchern und bietet damit zugleich einen kundigen Gesamtüberblick über das größte Reisewerk des 17. Jahrhunderts, wenn nicht der Weltliteratur.
