Die Sammlung von Aufsätzen und Beiträgen aus mehr als drei Jahrzehnten umfasst inhaltlich die Zeitspanne von der Entstehung evangelischer Kommunitäten und deren anfänglicher Ablehnung durch die Kirchen und mancher Mitchristen bis hin zur gegenwärtigen Anerkennung und Wertschätzung. Es wird vom Werden transparochialen verbindlichen gemeinsamen Lebens berichtet. Dabei wird auch auf den Vorwurf eingegangen, diese Lebensform sei »katholisch«.Wollen die Kommunitäten »etwas Besonderes« sein? Nein, insofern sie in der Nachfolge Christi leben, die allen Christenmenschen aufgetragen ist. Sie tun das aber besonders intensiv dank des gemeinsamen Lebens, wodurch Reibungen und Schmerzen nicht ausbleiben können. Wo diese mit der Hilfe Gottes durchgestanden werden, entsteht eine Strahlkraft, die anziehend wirkt. Je länger je mehr wird den Kommunitäten aber auch bewusst, dass sie diesen Schatz »in irdenen Gefäßen« tragen. Das erdet ihre Spiritualität, deren unterschiedliche Ausformung und Auffächerung in den verschiedenen Darstellungen zum Ausdruck kommt.
