Das Buch zeigt anschaulich, wie Atatürks Türkei verabschiedet wird: Die Trennung von Staat und Religion gilt nur noch pro forma und könnte bald ganz fallen. Ernst zu nehmende Opposition wird unterdrückt. Man kehrt dem Westen den Rücken, blickt selbstbewusst nach Osten und Süden, lässt Truppen in Syrien und Nordafrika operieren und beansprucht das halbe östliche Mittelmeer. Doch auch in der türkischen Gesellschaft entsteht Neues: eine junge, liberale, demokratische, ökologische Zivilgesellschaft, die bereit ist zum Widerstand.
