Looking for Her

About this book

Looking for Her is set in Montreal, Ottawa and Nunavik, Northern Quebc, in 2019. It explores the intersecting lives of three women in search of themselves Cate, 43, is a university professor in an unfulfilling marriage. Moving lockstep with her husband Liam, she lives a measured life and keeps the peace, until she meets Isabel, 28, an attractive, biracial paramedic. Isabel is everything Cate is not: spontaneous, athletic, naturally beautiful. When Isabel learns that Cate is a teacher, she enlists her to mentor Nuna, 19, a troubled, urban Inuk living in Montreal. When the story opens, Nuna has gone missing. Feeling responsible for her disappearance, Cate and Isabel embark on a search to find her. Along the way, their friendship is tested, Nuna remains elusive, and Cate must contend with her ever-demanding husband, who resents her special relationship with the women. As lead after lead falls through and the search reaches a critical impasse, Cate and Isabel agree, reluctantly, to stop looking for her. When Cate and Isabel drift into each other' s arms, Cate reads it as a sign that her marriage is over, that she must stop living for others and finally live life on her own terms. Isabel sees it as the rehashing of an old wound. Once the smoke settles, the two women go in separate directions. At the end of the novel, Cate and Isabel hear from Nuna who left Montreal to live her life on her terms, rather than fulfill the expectations of Cate and Isabel.
