En novemberdag i 1918 standsede vrede arbejdere sporvognstrafikken ved Nørreport i København. Da en ung mand med rød fane sprang op på taget af linje 15, trak politiet træstavene, og demonstranterne knyttede næverne. Slaget på Grønttorvet blev en tre dage lang kamp med mange sårede og et propfyldt arresthus. Første Verdenskrig var netop slut, arbejdsløsheden tårnhøj, og overalt var der mangel på brød, brændsel og boliger. Jorden var gødet for revolutionære ideer, og der opstod interne brydninger i arbejderbevægelsen. Alligevel formåede Socialdemokratiet i 1920 at konsolidere sig som den dominerende kraft i fremtidens arbejderbevægelse, når den ikke lige blev udfordret af interne brydninger, en aktiv venstrefløj, lærerlockout eller store bededag.
