Born in Paris on 21 November 1694, Francois-Marie Arouet, pen name Voltaire, was a French philosopher, playwright, poet, and historian. A prolific and influential French Enlightenment writer in various forms (from novels to scientific works), he was particularly outspoken when it came to the subjects of civil liberties and religious intolerance.
