The Home and the World is a novel by Rabindranath Tagore. It tells the story of class, death, and empire over the course of one lifetime. It intertwines reflections on modernity with memories of life in pre-colonial Bengal. The protagonist, Nikhil, is born to a family of landowners in an agricultural society, but as he matures and his consciousness expands he sees that this complacent world is coming to an end.
