Et af de mest kendte danske eksempler er forfatteren Amalie Skrams nøgleromaner om 6. afdeling pü Københavns Kommunehospital, hvor lÌgerne og ikke mindst overlÌge Knud Pontoppidan bliver genstand for alvorlig kritik. Senere kom modstanden fra grÌsrodsbevÌgelser og patientforeninger, der var stÌrkt inspirerede af den engelske og italienske antipsykiatribevÌgelse. I "Modstand mod psykiatri" analyserer tidligere overlÌge og professor Per Vestergaard de omrüder af psykiatrien, som isÌr har vÌret genstand for kritik. Det gÌlder de nedslidte anstalter, patienternes manglende retssikkerhed, tvivlsomme eller ligefrem farlige behandlingsmetoder og ikke mindst de magtfulde psykiateres dominans. Samtidig ser han pü, hvad den moderne psykiatri har lÌrt af denne modstand, og hvilke positive forandringer den har medført for patienterne. Endelig peger han pü, at modstanden har ført til en mere üben debat, der i dag inkluderer süvel patienter og pürørende som fagpersoner og politikere. Den debat er et helt nødvendigt grundlag for fremtidige reformer af psykiatrien.
