I slutningen af 1800-tallet gjorde kunsten for alvor sit indtog i hovedstadens bybillede. Hvor man før skulle vente længe mellem hver kunstudstilling, voksede der nu en jungle frem af kommercielle gallerier, tillokkende auktioner, atelierudstillinger og oprørske kunstnersammenslutninger. I mødet mellem idealisme, forretning og underholdning blev den scene sat, hvor kunstnere som Vilhelm Hammershøi, L.A. Ring, P.S. Krøyer og Anna Ancher kunne udfolde deres karrierer. Udviklingen kulminerede under Første Verdenskrig, hvor kunstmarkedet eksploderede i overstadig optimisme. Overalt blev kunst pludselig genstand for spekulation, mens nye gallerier skød op uge for uge. Alt skulle afprøves for at bringe kunsten ud til folket og få penge i kassen. For en stund kunne man gå ind fra gaden og købe værker af Monet, van Gogh, Klimt og Kandinskij. I "Champagneårene" fortæller kunsthistoriker Jesper Svenningsen om det moderne kunstlivs rivende udvikling i perioden 1870-1920.
