Biotechnology, is the manipulation of biological organisms to make products that benefit human beings. Biotechnology contributes to such diverse areas as food production, waste disposal, mining and medicine. Plant biotechnology may be defined as the art, science and application of knowledge obtained from the study of life sciences to create technological improvements and change the genetics of plants in order to produce desired characteristics in plant species. Genetic engineering opens a totally new dimension for bioprospecting. The search for new genes and their application is the primary objective of the biotech industry. Gene technology now enable humans to integrate revolutionary new properties in to cultivated plants through inter-specific or inter-generic gene transfer which was not possible through classical approach of crop improvement.
