Menino do Sertão reporta-se a fatos e acontecimentos extremamente ricos ocorridos em variadas regiões do país, graças à experiência pessoal de Jones. Os episódios que ocorrem no Ceará, Brasília, Goiás, Amazônia e no Paraná despertam a curiosidade, por serem muito relevantes e narrados de forma leve, por vezes até divertida. Os dados históricos são de particular relevância, pois o autor optou por dar riqueza de detalhes, sem enfadonha. E, quando parece que a digressão é exagerada e dispersa-se da linha central do enredo, retoma ela a tempo de reinserir Jones dentro do contexto. E o caso das reflexões sobre Canudos, da análise dos governos militares e o pensamento do autor sobre o suposto preconceito sulista contra nordestinos.
