Philippe Sands explora en aquest relat la relació entre Augusto Pinochet i Walther Rauff, ofi cial de les SS alemanyes. Arran de la detenció del dictador xilè a Londres el 1998, Sands va poder participar en un dels casos penals internacionals més importants des dels judicis de Nuremberg. Anys després, va trobar una missiva escrita per un antic líder nazi: Walther Rauff. L'autor de la carta, creador de les camionetes amb cambra de gas, aconsellava un vell camarada sobre com fugir de les autoritats en plena postguerra. Perseguit per crims contra la humanitat i genocidi, el jerarca havia aconseguit traslladar-se a Xile. A Philippe Sands no se li va ocórrer mai que hi pogués haver alguna connexió entre Rauff i Pinochet, però les seves vides havien estat profundament entrellaçades.
