Modern Colonization
About this book
First published in 1951, Modern Colonization breaks new ground in British geographical literature since it aims at outlining the geographical factors in colonization, particularly that of the tropics. French geographers have contributed much to what they have termed 'colonial geography', but this is the first British study and follows a plan different from that of any French writer. The first chapters review the unfortunate lack of our work in this field and define the content of the subject; geographical factors in the evolution of past and present empires are briefly summarized. Succeeding chapters are devoted to the physical, social, and economic geography of colonization, including colonial transport. Finally, some political aspects are reviewed, such as colonial frontiers and colonies in world strategy.
