The activities in this book follow and build upon the strategic conversation skills introduced in Kehes' Conversation Strategies. Discussion Strategies develops discussion skills at high levels of communicative interaction, especially communication in academic settings. Students are guided through step-by-step procedures that provide extensive practice in a variety of strategies for leading and participating in discussions.
Discussion Strategies offers focused practice in key discussion techniques such as using rejoinders, asking follow-up questions, seeking and giving clarification, using comprehension checks, answering with detail, soliciting more detail from others, interrupting appropriately during discussions, recounting information, volunteering responses, supporting the discussion leader, expressing and supporting opinions, referencing sources when giving opinions, and leading group discussions.
Each unit builds on and recycles previously learned strategies. The first 28 units provide controlled practice designed for pair or triad work. Units 29–38 move learners into less structured, more open-ended discussions that involve larger groups or whole-class interaction using authentic reading materials.
