Dealing with Capacity and Other Legal Issues with Adults with Acquired Neurological Conditions
A Resource for SLTs
About this book
The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) came into law in 2005 to protect and empower people who may lack the capacity or are at risk of compromised capacity. Issues around capacity, deprivation of liberty and the Mental Health Act are becoming more relevant as patients live longer and the idea of 'capacity' is better understood. In addition, speech and language therapists (SLTs) are now more often involved in this discussion. This book supports SLTs in clinical practice who may be asked to deal with issues relating to the decision-making and mental capacity of their clients. It provides a resource to demystify the MCA, highlighting its importance for our clients and their dysphagia and communication difficulties. It is a practical resource that includes case studies and materials to support clinicians in daily practice, both in completing capacity assessments and in supporting patients and their decision makers to plan for the future.
