This book brings together what we know about adolescents with language disorders in order to argue for increased access to quality assessment, intervention services, and to robust educational support. Chapters in Part I summarize what we know about this population and presents the challenges faced by young people with language disorders during this unique life stage. Chapters cover: our current understanding of language disorders, methods for listening to and working with adolescents, adolescent mental health, and the relevance of language disorders in youth justice contexts. Chapters in Part II provide details of interventions which have a sound theoretical rationale and evidence-base, related to vocabulary, grammar, narrative skills, Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and social communication skills. Chapters in Part III discuss ways that schools can support adolescents with language disorders through collaboration with speech and language therapists. With contributions from an international team of researchers and clinicians, the book will enable readers to better support adolescents with language disorders, and consider how interventions can be designed to increase language abilities and maximize inclusion within education and beyond.
