La bêta-thalassémie est une maladie due à des modifications (mutations) dans les gènes qui sont transmises de parents à enfant. Vous êtes atteint(e) de bêta-thalassémie lorsque vos deux parents vous ont transmis un gène muté. Cette maladie existe sous deux formes : la bêta-thalassémie majeure et la bêta-thalassémie intermédiaire. Il est également possible d'être porteur sain de la bêta-thalassémie sans être atteint de la maladie. C'est ce que l'on appelle un trait bêta-thalassémique (ou bêta-thalassémie mineure). Le traitement dépend du type de bêta-thalassémie dont vous êtes atteint(e). Les personnes souffrant de bêta-thalassémie majeure auront régulièrement besoin de transfusions sanguines tout au long de leur vie. De nouveaux traitements pour la bêta-thalassémie ont été récemment autorisés ou font actuellement l'objet d'essais cliniques dans le monde entier, avec des résultats prometteurs.
