Acoustics in Moving Inhomogeneous Media

About this book

This book offers a uniquely complete and rigorous study of sound propagation and scattering in moving inhomogeneous media. This area of research is of great importance in many fields, including atmospheric and ocean acoustics, aero-acoustics, acoustics of turbulent flows, remote sensing of the atmosphere and ocean, noise pollution in the atmosphere, and wave propagation. The book begins by considering sound propagation through moving media with deterministic inhomogeneities such as vertical profiles of temperature and wind velocity in the atmosphere. It moves on to a study of sound propagation in random media with fluctuations in sound speed, density, and medium velocity. Then state-of-the-art numerical methods for calculating the sound field and its statistical characteristics are presented, with codes downloadable from the book's website.

This third edition revises the text from the previous edition for better readability. It also presents new results such as recently derived wide-angle parabolic equations. The atmospheric turbulence model is extended, and the statistical characteristics of acoustic signals are formulated for slanted and vertical propagation with comparison to experimental data. An entirely new chapter considers probability density functions of acoustic signals in a random medium.

This book is essential for graduate students and researchers with a range of theoretical and applied interests in acoustics.
