Mit der fortschreitenden Edition der Korrespondenz, der philosophischen und politischen Schriften in der Leibniz-Akademieausgabe tritt die große Bedeutung, die Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) der Vereinigung der getrennten christlichen Kirchen zeit seines Lebens beigemessen hat, immer deutlicher zutage. So kam es 2009 im Berliner Schloss Charlottenburg zu einer ersten internationalen Tagung, die sich spezifisch mit Leibniz' ökumenischem Anliegen auseinandersetzt und deren Ergebnisse dieser Band zusammenfasst.
