Der Umgang mit dem Universalgelehrten G. W. Leibniz (1646–1716) in der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus gibt ein äußerst vielfältiges und vielschichtiges Bild ab. Das Spektrum der Interpretationen oszillierte zwischen nationalsozialistischer Reklamation des "deutschen Philosophen" für die Kriegswissenschaft und Rekurs auf Leibniz' intellektuellen Nachlass geradezu als eine Art "Gegengift" gegen die NS-Ideologie. Auf einer internationalen Tagung in Hannover im Jahr 2011 wurde erstmals dieses bisher von der Forschung wenig beachtete Thema in dessen Facettenreichtum behandelt. Hinterfragt wurde ebenfalls das komplizierte Verhältnis zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik im "Dritten Reich". Zu komparatistischen Zwecken wurde die zeitgenössische Leibniz-Forschung in Spanien, Italien, Japan, Frankreich und Ungarn einbezogen.

An den in diesem Band vereinigten Beiträgen lässt sich indessen nicht nur der Reichtum der bereits erzielten Ergebnisse holzschnittartig beobachten; sie offenbaren auch mehr denn je die Desiderate und geben wichtige Impulse für das künftig noch zu Leistende.
