Die Sparta-Rezeption, sowohl während der Antike als auch im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert, steht im Fokus dieses Bandes. In einem ersten Abschnitt stellen die Autoren die Frage nach der Identität der spartanischen Gesellschaft – ganz im Zeichen des Meinungsstreits über das Menschenbild im antiken Sparta, in Konfrontation mit dem damaligen politischen System. Thema des zweiten Abschnitts ist die vielfältige Rezeption Spartas durch spätere Generationen als Gegenstand eines langwährenden wissenschaftlichen Diskurses, insbesondere die Verarbeitung des damit verbundenen Stigmas der deutschen NS-Vergangenheit.
Die neuzeitlichen Rezeptionswirkungen werden an den Beispielen des pädagogischen Einflusses Spartas auf das preußische Erziehungssystem und des Spartabilds in der deutschen Geschichtsschreibung nach 1945 aufgezeigt. Als prinzipielles Ergebnis ist festzuhalten, dass die Welt des Tyrtaios noch immer ein nicht hinreichend erforschtes Rätsel darstellt. Darüber hinaus besteht bis heute Skepsis gegenüber einer – bewusst oder unbewusst – utopischen und emotionalisierenden Darstellung der spartanischen Illusion.
