Die Epistolographie gehört zu den produktivsten literarischen Gattungen der lateinischen Spätantike. Dennoch datiert ihre intensivere Erforschung erst in die letzten Jahrzehnte. Diese konzentriert sich dabei in der Regel entweder auf einzelne Autoren und ihre Netzwerke oder sie bildet bestimmte regionale Schwerpunkte aus. Überregionale oder transhistorische Ansätze stellen indes immer noch die Ausnahme dar. Hier setzen die Beiträge dieses Bandes an: Neben der Diskussion grundlegender sammlungs- und gattungstheoretischer Fragen eröffnen sie in exemplarischen Fallstudien ein breites Panorama an inhaltlichen, praxeologischen und funktionalen Aspekten spätantiker und ansatzweise auch frühmittelalterlicher lateinischer Epistolographie. In diachroner Perspektive werden außerdem Kontinuitäten und Transformationen sichtbar, welche die Epistolographie in der Spätantike und darüber hinaus ausgebildet hat. Damit leistet dieser Band einen Beitrag zu einer kulturgeschichtlich orientierten Gattungsgeschichte des komplexen Phänomens spätantiker Briefliteratur – und dies über eine Zeitspanne, die selten als Ganzes in den Blick genommen wird.
