Die Literatur-, Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte des deutschen Südwestens (definiert im Sinne des alemannischen Sprachraums) macht im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter eine rasante Entwicklung durch, so daß diese Region zu einer Kulturlandschaft europäischen Ranges wird. Maßgeblich für diese Entwicklung waren solche Erscheinungen wie die ersten deutschen Artusepen, die durch Reformklöster verbreitete Hirsauer Liturgie, die Manessische Liederhandschrift, neue Bildtypen wie die Christus- und Johannesgruppen, die mystischen Schriften Heinrich Seuses und die südwestdeutschen Schwesternbücher sowie die Handschriftenproduktion der Lauber-Werkstatt in Hagenau. Träger der Kultur waren nicht nur die klösterlichen Netzwerke der Benediktiner, Zisterzienser und Prämonstratenser, sondern seit dem 13. Jahrhundert auch und vor allem die Dominikaner, Franziskaner und ihre weiblichen Zweige, die oberrheinischen, schwäbischen und Schweizer Städte im Dreieck Straßburg‑Augsburg‑Bern und die Adelsfamilien und Stadtbürger dieser Region. Die neue Reihe möchte zur Erforschung der südwestdeutschen Kultur des Hoch- und Spätmittelalters durch die Publikation von Sammelbänden, Monographien und Editionen bisher ungedruckter Texte anregen.
