Neben seiner Rolle als Wissensspeicher und -vermittler stellt es zudem selbstverständlich ein bedeutendes Zeugnis seiner eigenen Zeit dar, und es fungierte als Muster für die späteren byzantinischen etymologischen Lexika. Trotz dieser Tatsachen ist die Überlieferung von Orions Etymologicum bisher nur unzulänglich untersucht worden und auch eine kritische Edition des Textes fehlt dementsprechend noch. Diese englischsprachige Arbeit bietet die erste umfassende Untersuchung der Überlieferungsgeschichte dieses Lexikons unter Berücksichtigung der direkten sowie der wichtigsten indirekten Zeugen.
