This book explores a humanistic approach to English for academic purposes pedagogy through the creation of a theory for the designing and planning of pedagogical activities. The theory proposes that by applying the concepts of people, place and compassion in planning and designing stages, learners will have the opportunity to take control of their learning and develop their skillset – this is power. This publication considers the reasons why English for academic purposes needs a humanistic approach to pedagogy with a focus on the contexts in which English for academic purposes takes place and profiling the student. The theory is presented is outlined and supported with a compendium of activities that could be used and adapted by practitioners in their teaching. This book will be of interest to applied linguists, language educators, EAP professionals, learning developers, researchers and anyone involved in the practice of teaching and learning in higher education.
