The mining and allied industries are now fully geared to meet the challenges of the user industries commensurate with the overall industrial growth in the country. In this context, the earthmoving machines play a dominant role to maximize the production capacity. The tyres are the critical elements contributing to the operation and maintenance cost of mobile earthmoving machines. Selection, application and management of tyres are the important issues in relation to day-to-day operation of the tyre mounted machines deployed in these industries. The problems associated with the use of Off-the-Road (OTR) tyres are largely different from those linked to other transportation systems. In view of the above, the first National Seminar on "Tyres in Mining and Allied Sectors—Status and Outlook" was organized by the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. Delegates from tyre manufacturing companies, mining and allied industries, educational institutions, R&D laboratories etc. have attended the seminar. The Seminar Volume contains twenty two numbers of selected technical papers to cover the various aspects of tyres like design and manufacturing, testing, failure and maintenance and the disposal of scrap tyres.
