Mathias, garçon timoré, vit en province: il abandonne le foyer conjugal après une querelle avec sa femme et sa belle-mère et se rend à Montecarlo. Là, il gagne au jeu plusieurs dizaines de milliers de lires. En lisant les faits divers, il apprend qu'on le croit mort, suite à la fausse identification du cadavre d'un désespéré, qui s'est jeté dans le puits de Mathias. Cette étrange situation lui suggère de faire croire à sa mort véritable et de tenter de commencer une vie nouvelle. Feu Mathias Pascal prend alors le nom d'Adrien Meis. Il s'installe à Rome dans une pension de famille, tenue par Anselme Paleari et sa fille Adrienne, mais dirigée en fait par un dangereux individu, Terence Papiano, veuf d'une seconde fille de Paleari. Dans la maison vivent deux autres personnages: Scipio, le frère de Terence, à demi épileptique, et voleur, ainsi que Silvia Caporale, professeur de musique, victime de Papiano, mais que le maître de céans, fanatique de spiritisme, estime pour ses éminentes qualités de médium. Tels sont les personnages qui recréent autour de Mathias Pascal la vie de société qu'il avait pensé fuir à jamais. La vie quotidienne recommence, avec ses petits événements, ses aventures agréables ou désagréables, sans oublier l'humble amour dont la pauvre Adrienne entoure le fugitif. Mathias est partagé entre la crainte de voir se découvrir sa situation équivoque et le besoin de se sentir vivre en se liant à ses semblables par un nouveau réseau d'intérêts et de sentiments...
