La Gerusalemme liberata e considerata il capolavoro del Tasso. Il poema tratta di un avvenimento realmente accaduto, ossia la prima crociata. Tasso inizio a scrivere l'opera con il titolo di Gierusalemme nel 1559 durante il soggiorno a Venezia e la concluse nel 1575. L'opera fu pubblicata integralmente nel 1581 con il titolo di Gerusalemme liberata. In seguito alla pubblicazione del poema il poeta rimise mano all'opera e la riscrisse eliminando tutte le scene amorose ed accentuando il tono religioso ed epico della trama. Cambio anche il titolo in Gerusalemme Conquistata. In realta la Conquistata fu immediatamente dimenticata e la redazione che continuo ad avere grande successo e ad essere ristampata, in Italia e nei paesi stranieri, fu la Liberata.
