Da lui considerata come una "cosa sciocca", l'attivita poetica di Michelangelo si viene caratterizzando, a differenza di quella usuale nel Cinquecento influenzata dal Petrarca, da toni energici, austeri e intensamente espressivi, ripresi dalle poesie di Dante.
I piu antichi componimenti poetici datano agli anni 1504-1505, ma e probabile che ne abbia realizzati anche in precedenza, dato che sappiamo che molti suoi manoscritti giovanili andarono perduti.
La sua formazione poetica avvenne probabilmente sui testi di Petrarca e Dante, conosciuti nella cerchia umanistica della corte di Lorenzo de' Medici. I primi sonetti sono legati a vari temi collegati al suo lavoro artistico, a volte raggiungono il grottesco con immagini e metafore bizzarre. Successivi sono i sonetti realizzati per Vittoria Colonna e per l'amato Tommaso de' Cavalieri; in essi Michelangelo si concentra maggiormente sul tema neoplatonico dell'amore, sia divino che umano, che viene tutto giocato intorno al contrasto tra amore e morte, risolvendolo con soluzioni ora drammatiche, ora ironicamente distaccate.
Negli ultimi anni le sue rime si focalizzano maggiormente sul tema del peccato e della salvezza individuale; qui il tono diventa amaro e a volte angoscioso, tanto da realizzare vere e proprie visioni mistiche del divino.
