Il incendie l'usine, tue Labroue qui l'a surpris, menace Jeanne, s'arrange pour lui faire endosser la culpabilité du crime, puis s'enfuit en Amérique sous le nom de Paul Harmant. Il passe pour mort. Jeanne est condamnée et perd la raison. Quand la vue d'un incendie réveille sa mémoire, elle n'a qu'une idée, s'évader pour retrouver ses enfants. Hospitalisée a Bicetre, puis prisonniere a Clermont, elle s'enfuit déguisée en religieuse et se rend a Paris ou elle sera porteuse de pain sous l'identité de Lise Perrin...
