En1639, au château de Chaumont en Touraine, le jeune marquis Henri d'Effiat prend congé de sa mère et de la princesse Marie de Gonzague, duchesse de Mantoue, qu'il aime et dont il est aimé. Impressionné par les propos du maréchal de Bassompierre sur les qualités et la fidélité des nobles, il s'insurge contre l'arrestation du même maréchal par les sbires de Richelieu. En allant au siège de Perpignan pour être présenté au roi, Cinq-Mars s'arrête à Loudun, où se déroule le procès d'Urbain Grandier, prêtre accusé de magie par des juges, dont le lugubre Laubardemont, envoyés eux aussi par le cardinal. Torturé, puis condamné à mort, Urbain n'est défendu que par la supérieure des Ursulines, Jeanne de Belfiel, la nièce même de Laubardemont. Elle devient folle lorsque Urbain est brûlé vif devant une foule horrifiée par l'injustice. Cinq-Mars assiste lui-même à cette exécution après avoir été informé par son ancien maître, l'abbé Quillet, des crimes de Richelieu. Richelieu, de son côté, assisté de son «Éminence grise», le père Joseph, affermit son pouvoir sur le roi LouisXIII, qui n'a pas le courage de se débarrasser de son ministre...
