Le grand-oncle du narrateur, l'épicurien docteur Benjamin Rathery, mene joyeuse vie a Clamecy. Endetté, il cede aux pressions de sa soeur, qui veut le marier a la fille du médecin de village Minxit. A chaque fois que Benjamin doit rendre visite a sa promise, il est sollicité en chemin par des rencontres de hasard qui l'empechent de se rendre chez Minxit, et lui permettent de se livrer a son gout de la conversation ou a ses facéties habituelles. Ainsi, a l'auberge de Manette ou il déjeune en compagnie d'un vieux sergent, il se fait passer pour le Juif errant et accomplit un «miracle» en guérissant un paralysé de la mùchoire. Parvenu enfin chez Minxit, il séduit cet alter ego, mais échoue aupres d'Arabelle, «une femme comme sur trente il y en a vingt-cinq», courtisée de surcroßt par un hobereau, Pont-Cassé. Emprisonné pour dettes, puis libéré, il se bat en duel avec son rival. Arabelle s'enfuit avec Pont-Cassé, et ils meurent tous deux dans un accident. Benjamin soigne le malheureux Minxit, qui meurt en lui léguant tous ses biens. Le narrateur semble annoncer une suite: «Peut-etre verrons-nous plus tard quel usage il fit de sa fortune.»
