Dix ans se sont écoulés depuis la fin de «Joseph Balsamo». Le roman s'ouvre également sur un prologue: Au cours d'un souper chez le duc de Richelieu, en1784, se trouvent réunis certains protagonistes de «Joseph Balsamo» (Taverney, Richelieu, la Du Barry). Balsamo, revenu d'Amérique, leur prédit et leur fin privée et l'avenir révolutionnaire de la France. Le reste du roman, prenant appui sur la célèbre affaire du Collier, va faire de Marie-Antoinette la figure symbolique de la «mauvaise mère», prostituée et despotique à la fois, dont la domination mènera la royauté à sa perte. Le début du roman nous montre la reine, accompagnée d'Andrée, rendant une visite de charité à Jeanne de La Motte-Valois, en cachette du roi. Sur le chemin du retour, la reine, par la conduite imprudente de son cabriolet, suscite la colère du peuple, qui la prend pour une courtisane. Elle n'est sauvée que par l'intervention d'un jeune noble, le comte Olivier de Charny...
