Mais la reine Caroline ordonne un sursis de six semaines a l'exécution. Cette décision révolte la population d'Édimbourg qui se souleve et prend de force la prison d'Édimbourg. Et tandis que les émeutiers recherchent Porteous pour lui faire un sort, un des conspirateurs offre la liberté a une jeune prisonniere, Effie, dans l'attente de son proces pour infanticide. Celle-ci refuse, préférant la mort a l'honneur perdu. Elle ignore que sa soeur, Jeanie Deans, va se battre pour la sauver de cette accusation injuste.
