Viele von ihnen stellten nur weibliche Assistenten an und blieben unverheiratet; einige lebten in lebenslangen Beziehungen mit Frauen. Diese Pionierinnen gehörten einer Generation an, die erstmals die Macht hatte, ihre eigene visuelle Darstellung, sowie die anderer Frauen, zu definieren.
