Mister Roberts

About this book

''Mister Roberts'' is the classic 1946 war novel by American author Thomas Heggen, inspired by his own wartime experiences serving in the South Pacific theater. The book provides a uniquely comedic yet poignant look at military life behind the front lines, focusing entirely on the exhausting struggle against boredom and poor leadership rather than active combat. The story takes place entirely aboard a US Navy auxiliary cargo ship, the USS Reluctant. In the famous words of the story's later adaptations, the ship spends its days sailing "from Apathy to Tedium, with occasional side trips to Monotony and Ennui." The narrative follows Lieutenant (junior grade) Douglas Roberts, the popular first lieutenant who acts as the de facto leader and protector of the crew. He spends his time managing the restless sailors and standing up to Captain Morton, the ship's tyrannical, petty, and small-minded skipper. Roberts desperately yearns for a transfer to a real combat vessel before the war ends, submitting transfer requests on a daily basis. He eventually wins his hard-fought transfer to a destroyer, but the story concludes with a tragic twist when he is killed in action off Japan.
