The Bustan is one of the most celebrated works of Saadi Shirazi, the great thirteenth-century Persian poet and one of the enduring voices of world literature.
Written in verse, The Bustan — “The Orchard” — is a moral and spiritual journey through the highest virtues of human life: justice, generosity, love, humility, gratitude, wisdom, and compassion. With a clear, vivid, and deeply humane style, Saadi weaves together stories, parables, and reflections, offering readers a work that speaks both to the heart and to the mind. Within these pages, the ancient wisdom of Persia opens onto universal themes: the relationship between power and justice, the fragility of the human condition, the value of kindness, and the search for a righteous and meaningful life. Each episode becomes a lesson; each verse an invitation to moderation, mercy, and self-knowledge.
Editorial Note
Originally composed in Persian verse, The Bustan is written in rhymed couplets, in the traditional masnavi form. This English translation renders the poem in a flowing prose style, preserving its moral and spiritual substance rather than its original metrical structure.
