She was hired to protect two children. She becomes convinced something dead is trying to reach them.
A young governess arrives at a remote English estate to care for two strangely composed orphans — and soon becomes certain that the ghosts of two former servants are stalking the grounds, intent on corrupting the children in her care. As her certainty hardens into obsession, Henry James never lets the reader settle: is she uncovering a genuine haunting, or unraveling in front of us?
The Turn of the Screw is the ghost story that redefined the genre — a masterclass in psychological ambiguity where the scariest thing on the page might be the narrator herself.
- One of literature's most debated unreliable narrators
- The gothic ghost story that influenced a century of psychological horror
- Still argued over by readers more than a hundred years later
