Frankenstein

About this book

Driven by an obsessive desire to uncover the secrets of life, a brilliant young student abandons the ordinary limits of science and dedicates himself to an experiment no human being has ever attempted. Working in secrecy and isolation, Victor Frankenstein succeeds in animating a body assembled through his own forbidden research. Yet the moment his creation opens its eyes, triumph gives way to horror. Unable to face what he has brought into the world, Victor rejects the being and attempts to escape the consequences of his actions. Left alone, without guidance, affection, or a place in society, the abandoned creature must learn to survive by observing humanity from the shadows. He discovers language, history, tenderness, and companionship, but also prejudice, cruelty, and fear. His desire for acceptance gradually turns into anger when every attempt at connection ends in rejection. As creator and creation move across Europe in a destructive pursuit, their lives become bound together by guilt, resentment, loneliness, and revenge. Victor struggles to protect those he loves while refusing to accept responsibility for the suffering he has caused. The creature, intelligent and painfully self-aware, demands recognition from the man who gave him life and then denied him every form of belonging. First published anonymously in 1818, Frankenstein is one of the most influential novels in English literature. Mary Shelley combined Gothic atmosphere, philosophical inquiry, scientific speculation, and emotional tragedy to create a work that helped shape modern science fiction while transforming the traditional tale of terror. The novel raises enduring questions about the responsibilities of invention. Does the ability to create something justify bringing it into existence? What obligations does a creator have toward the life they produce? Can knowledge become dangerous when separated from compassion, judgment, and moral responsibility? These questions remain especially relevant in an age shaped by rapid scientific and technological change. Frankenstein is also a profound exploration of isolation. Both Victor and the creature become separated from society through their choices and circumstances. One withdraws because of ambition and shame; the other is excluded because of appearance and fear. Their parallel experiences reveal how loneliness can distort judgment, deepen resentment, and transform the need for love into a desire for destruction. Told through letters, personal narratives, and layered testimony, the novel allows readers to encounter events from several perspectives. The creature is not presented as a simple monster, nor is Victor portrayed as an uncomplicated hero. Each becomes morally complex, capable of intelligence, suffering, tenderness, selfishness, and cruelty. Set against dramatic landscapes of mountains, storms, frozen seas, and darkened laboratories, the story moves from intellectual excitement to psychological collapse. Its atmosphere of dread is balanced by moments of reflection on family, education, nature, justice, and human dignity. More than two centuries after its publication, Frankenstein continues to influence literature, cinema, theatre, philosophy, and popular culture. Its central conflict between uncontrolled ambition and neglected responsibility remains timeless. This edition offers readers the opportunity to encounter the original novel behind one of the world's most enduring cultural myths: a tragic story about the longing to create, the need to belong, and the terrible consequences of refusing responsibility for what we bring into the world.
