The Silk Road Compendium: Civilizations in Motion

An Interdisciplinary Survey of Geography, Archaeology, and Cultural Exchange in Eurasia

About this book

The Silk Road Compendium: Civilizations in Motion is an ambitious " Big History" synthesis of Eurasian history. Moving beyond traditional historical accounts, author Gao Jianqun integrates forty years of literary and historical inquiry with observations and materials gathered during his 2018 " Journey Along the Silk Road" — a 20,000-kilometer expedition spanning 17 countries.
This encyclopedic work spans an immense chronological scale, from the Cenozoic orogeny 70 million years ago to the modern era. By synthesizing geology, archaeology, and cultural morphology, Gao maps the evolution and interplay of three distinct civilizational spheres: the nomadic steppes, agricultural and urban centers, and maritime networks. At the heart of the volume is the author' s original " Great Nomad Drift" theory, which provides a systematic framework for understanding the migration trajectories of more than 200 ancient tribes and their transformative impact on the Eurasian historical landscape.
As an interdisciplinary cultural survey, The Silk Road Compendium offers a multidimensional perspective on the forces that shaped, and continue to shape, the Eurasian heartland. Its synthesis of Silk Road studies, Eurasian history, archaeology, historical geography, migration, and cross-cultural exchange makes it particularly relevant to scholars, students, and academic libraries working across these fields.
