Emerging from the anonymity of a Scottish new town in the early 1980s, The Jesus and Mary Chain have carved a path through alternative music that is as confrontational as it is hypnotic. Rather than repeat themselves, the band then pivoted on Darklands (1987), stripping away much of the distortion to reveal a more reflective core and an even stronger set of songs. From the slicker textures of Automatic (1989) to Honey's Dead (1992), the group continued to evolve, flirting with electronic rhythms and industrial sounds. Later releases showed a quieter, acoustic side before the band fractured after Munki (1998). Robin Kennedy spent his formative years in an Ayrshire, Scotland, village twenty miles from the hometown of William and Jim Reid. Prior to moving to Edinburgh, he enjoyed four years studying English at Stirling University, where he frequently neglected the pursuit of academic excellence in favour of playing guitar. Now in his twentieth year as a secondary school English teacher in Fife, he has written this book as a tribute to the music of The Jesus and Mary Chain, a band he has been a fan of for almost four decades.
