Think about your hands first thing in the morning. Maybe it is your knees instead, or your hips, or a single stubborn thumb.
Whatever the joint, you know the feeling. The reluctance before the first movement of the day. The sense that something needs to be talked into working.
You are not imagining this. Something real is happening inside that joint, and understanding it plainly, without the jargon, is the first step toward moving through it with less fear.
A joint is a hinge with two jobs. It has to hold your weight, and it has to let two bones glide past each other without grinding. To do both at once, the body wraps the ends of those bones in a smooth, slippery layer called cartilage. Cartilage has no nerve endings of its own, which is part of why joint damage can build quietly for years before you feel anything. Around it sits a sealed pocket called the joint capsule, and inside that capsule is synovial fluid, which lubricates and feeds.
The book starts there, with what is actually happening, and only then moves to what to do about it.
Chapter two makes the case for tai chi specifically rather than movement in general: the weight shifts are slow enough to be interrupted, the stances are shallow enough to be held, and the whole practice can be scaled down without becoming a different activity.
Then twenty-eight days of short daily sessions, illustrated, built on five foundational stances introduced one at a time. Chair-supported versions throughout. A safety and pacing chapter before any of it. A chapter on life after day twenty-eight. And a chapter specifically about flares β the days when the joints are worse, practice feels impossible, and the honest instruction is to do the smallest available version rather than nothing or the usual amount.
The book is explicit about its limits. It does not claim to reverse arthritis, replace medication, or substitute for the clinician who knows your history and your imaging. It says so at the front and it does not quietly forget.
Written for adults living with joint pain who want gentle daily movement described accurately and paced honestly.
