Ngaahika Ndeenda

About this book

This renowned play (originally published in G?k?y? as Ngaahika Ndeenda) was developed with Kikuyu actors at the Kamirithu CulturalCentre in Limuru. It proved so powerful, especially in its use of song, that it was banned (came back on stage in May 2022) and was probably one of the factors that led to the detention of one of the authors without trial in December 1977. In March 1982, the Kamirithu Theatre was dismantled by the authorities when the G?k?y? musical by the authors, Mother, Cry for Me, was in final rehearsal awaiting for a licence for performance at the National Theatre in Nairobi. Ng?g? wa Thiong'o is Kenya's most prolific writer. He was born in Limuru (Central Kenya) in 1938 and educated at Makerere University (Uganda) and Leeds University (UK). He is well known internationally as a novelist, a playwright and a literary critic. His novels, Weep Not, Child (1964), The River Between (1965), A Grain of Wheat (1967), Petals of Blood (1977) and Devil on the Cross (1980), have established him firmly in the world's literary scene. He has had an impact with the plays The Black Hermit (1968), 'This Time Tomorrow' (published in Short African Plays) and The Trial of Dedan Kimathi (1976), written with Micere Githae Mugo. Ng?g? wa M?ri? was born in Rolomo, Limuru in 1951. He was educated in Ngenia Secondary School and, from 1972 to 1974, worked with Kenya Posts and Telecommunications. He took a Diploma in Adult Education at the Institute of Adult Studies, University of Nairobi, and then joined the Institute for Development Studies. Whilst working at the Institute, he became involved with peasants and workers in Community Development at Kamirithu, Limuru. Ng?gi wa Thiong'o ni mwandiki wa ng'ano na mathaako ma ngerekano gakuundi.
