Arctic Mood: A Narrative of Arctic Adventures
About this book
''Arctic Mood: A Narrative of Arctic Adventures'' is a 1949 autobiographical book that offers an honest and highly original account of the author's experiences living and working in the remote snowy wilderness of northern Alaska.
Richards details her time serving as a government schoolteacher for the Alaska Division of the Native School & Medical Service. Stationed in the isolated village of Wainwright, Alaska, between 1924 and 1926, her duties extended far beyond the classroom to include administering medical aid, counseling the village government, and organizing community festivities.
The narrative provides an intimate look at the daily lives, environment, and customs of the local Iñupiat (Eskimo) people. It tracks their activities throughout the changing seasons, including vivid descriptions of indigenous walrus hunts and whale kills.
This re-publication of the original edition is notable for containing rare portraits, environmental photographs, and illustrations that document early 20th-century Arctic life and whaling culture.
