About this book
The Netherlands from the Burgundian dukes to the twentieth century, by an Oxford historian who spent thirty years on Dutch archives. Edmundson wrote for the Cambridge Modern History before making this single-volume account, and he is best on the eighty years' war and the republic's constitution. The chapters on the East Indies are franker about the trade than English histories usually were. Sixty plates of seventeenth-century battle, siege and street scenes, among them works by Andries van Eertvelt and Peter Snayers, follow the war and the towns through which the republic was made.
